That’s right ladies; ATP bringing back this event series just for you!

On 2 more select Saturday evenings throughout the rest of the season, ATP will construct a terrain park area with features specifically designed for learning and progression that will be open to ladies only. We want women of all ages and abilities, both ski and snowboard, to get together and ride in a laid-back environment among friends.

The session will begin at 7pm, with a flexible, open format of whatever you girls would like to see. If you just want to make laps through the girls-only park, sounds great! If you are starting out and want to learn how to slide your first box, or how to hit a jump properly, ATP will be staffing select Trick Tip Advisors who will be happy to help you progress. Once the session has come to an end, we have lots of prizes which will be raffled off among all participants. Best of all, the event is Free with the purchase of a ski ticket!

Come enjoy a musical battle of the sexes! From Georges Bizet to
Irving Berlin, the complexion and complexity of love will be a musical
treat when APPropos takes the stage at the Ashe Arts Center at 7:30
p.m. February 12, 2010.
The Appalachian State University School of Music’s faculty ensemble,
APPropos includes Joseph Amaya, baritone; Mary Gayle Greene,
mezzo-soprano; Randall Outland, tenor; Julia Pedigo, soprano;
Priscilla Porterfield, mezzo-soprano, and Rodney Reynerson, piano.
The program will include opera, classical songs, and lighter selections
from Broadway musicals. Solos, duets, trios and the full ensemble will
create a memorable evening centered around the different "types" and
"stages" of love – all told in song.

Aspects of Love will be presented on Friday evening at 7:30 p.m.

Appalachian Ski Mountain, is located in Blowing Rock. Is OPEN for it's 2010 season! Appalachian Ski Mountain offers the French Swiss Ski College for those of you that are just learning to ski and caters to all ages, young and old. Appalachian Ski Mountain also offers an outdoor ice skating arena as the perfect complement to our slopes. Located in a spectacular scenic setting overlooking the ski slopes on one side, and the Blue Ridge Mountains on the other, Appalachian's outdoor ice arena has a refrigerated ice floor, and is fully lighted for skating under the stars seven nights a week. Skaters and non-skaters can watch the action and warm up by our rinkside bonfire. They offer skate rentals in traditional figure skates, as well as hockey skates.

Sugar Mountain Resort, is located in the village of Sugar Mountain in Avery County, NC. You will find 115 acres of ski and snowboard terrain and with a 1,200foot vertical drop. Other activities include tubing, ice skating and snowshoeing. It is scheduled to open soon with conditions permit.

Doc Watson in Concert-Todd, NC-Saturday, August 22

Since 2003, Doc and Richard Watson have been good neighbors and friends to the Ashe County community of Todd, just across the ridge from Deep Gap. Every August, they have played on the stage at Walter and Annie Cook Memorial Park in the middle of Todd’s historic district. Each year, thousands of fans and friends from near and far have filled the little park with their enthusiasm and love for one of our national treasures.

Doc Watson’s concert in Todd on Saturday, August 22, is a fundraiser for community projects and the James “Crow” Parsons Memorial Fund. As such, it will help to support the nonprofit Todd Community Preservation Organization in its efforts to sustain the community without destroying its unique character.

Tickets to the concert are $15 or $17 for credit card purchases. Children under 12 are admitted free. Only 1,500 tickets are available, that number being the capacity of Cook Memorial Park in the middle of Todd’s historic district. In addition to ticket sales, sponsors have come forward, helping to underwrite some of the concert expense and leaving more for the memorial fund. Among this year’s sponsors are the Kevin and Susan McCarter Family and Nan Wyatt.

Tickets are available at Todd General Store, Todd Mercantile (taking credit card orders), and RiverGirl Fishing Co. in Todd; the Boone Area Chamber of Commerce in Boone; and Ashe Visitor’s Center and BlueMoon Guitars in West Jefferson. When first-time visitors come to Ashe County, they
usually have at least one destination in mind: visiting
the Churches of the Frescoes.

The two churches are part of the Episcopal parish here
in Ashe County (Parish of the Holy Communion) and are
the Church of the Holy Trinity in Glendale Springs and
St. Mary’s in West Jefferson.

Episcopal missionaries from Valle Crucis (in nearby
Watauga County) held services at various locations in
Ashe County as early as 1852, but no continuing presence
of the Episcopal Church existed until 1895 when 19
candidates were presented for confirmation.

Bishop Cheshire (first name unknown) then hired two
schoolteachers and began a school – and in September,
1895, the church of St. Simon the Zealot was organized.
The church’s name was changed to St. Mary’s in 1903.
In 1900 another Bishop visited Glendale Springs and began
building Holy Trinity church.

Miss Jenny Fields, a trained nurse and midwife, moved into
the Holy Trinity Mission House in 1913 and began to tend
the sick and deliver babies in the community. She was
followed by other women and the community of Glendale
Springs began to grow.

The beautiful paintings at the two churches began when
Ben Long, an Italian-trained artist, painted three frescoes
at St. Mary’s: “Mary Great With Child,” in 1974, “John the
Baptist,” in 1975, and the superb “Mystery of Life,” in 1977.
In the summer of 1980, he painted the fresco of “The Last
Supper,” at Holy Trinity as that church building was being
restored.

Since the frescoes were completed, hundreds of thousands
of people have visited the churches. It is estimated that
60,000 pilgrims come to St. Mary’s and Holy Trinity
each year.

Acoustic jam nights Weekly Thursday night acoustic jams are held at the Jones House in downtown Boone every Thursday from 7 to 11 p.m. Musicians and non-musicians are all welcome to come to the Jones House community center for an evening of acoustic mountain music every Thursday night. Musicians of all levels are welcome. There will be a slow jam from 8 to 9 p.m. for folks interested in learning old-time fiddle tunes. There is a suggested donation of $1 to $5 for non-musicians. Coffee and other refreshments are available.

4-H Saddles Up Equestrian Show

The annual Blue Ridge Equestrian Fun Show is coming to Blowing Rock. The 4-H riding club is teaming up with Appalachian State University riders to expand the event, which typically draws several hundred people and some of the top riders in the region. The ASU Equestrian Club riders will also participate and serve as mentors, and the alliance will add nearly two dozen people to the event. Blue Ridge Equestrian 4-H has 16 full-time members and the expansion of the show will allow it to appeal to a wider range of riders.

There are 40 classes of competition this year, and entry fee is $8 for each category. There are also “Jackpot classes” with cash prize money, divided between the top three finishers, and an entry fee of $10. The show is on Sept. 13, with registration at 6 a.m. and the show beginning at 8 a.m. The show will continue until all events are complete, which depends on the numbers of participants. Other new additions to the show will bring more people of all age levels. This year there will be miniature horses to appeal to children, with other games added that aren’t horseback-related.

A concession stand will sell items to help support the horse club. Any non-profit can set up a booth for free, and the Blazing Saddles riding program will be in attendance this year. Auction items include coupons to area restaurants and businesses as well as collector’s items. The show will be held at the Blowing Rock Equestrian Preserve.

Stone Mountain State Park

Stone Mountain is not immediately visible upon entering the park that bears its name, but this magnificent 600-foot granite dome is well worth the wait.
